Water cut likely in Pimpri Chinchwad

PIMPRI: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is considering the imposition of water cuts, following increasing complaints of irregular or low-pressure water supply in various parts of the city.

The civic administration is contemplating the introduction of water cut to an area once a week to provide equal and adequate water supply to all parts of the city.

Many elected representatives in the ruling BJP are in favour of the imposition of water cuts. Mayor Rahul Jadhav and also Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge had recently convened meetings of the civic officials to discuss the issue of inadequate water supply to various areas.

It is suggested that closure of water supply to a part of the city once a week will save 70 million litres of water daily (MLD).

The Nigdi water pumping station supplies 490 MLD water while the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) supplies 30 MLD water. Thus every year, the city receives on an average 6,000 million cubic (TMC) ft water.

The irrigation department has offered to provide an additional water supply, if needed, with an enhanced price. Mayor Jadhav has said that the civic administration has been asked to take steps to streamline the city’s water supply to ensure adequate water to all city areas. “Water closure to a particular area once in a week will be introduced only if there is no improvement in the city’s water supply system,” he said.
