City gives presentation on environmentally sustainable transport at UN forum

Surat: Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan recently made a presentation on ‘Sustainable design and development- role of environmentally sustainable transport (EST)’ at intergovernmental 11th regional EST forum of Asia, which was held in Mongolia. The forum organized by United Nations Centre for Regional Development from October 2 to 5 was attended by representatives of 34 cities from 25 countries.
Surat in the presentation displayed a comprehensive mobility plan- 2046 and its vision and goals for the city in the coming years. M Thennarasan explained in his presentation how e-rickshaws and e-buses will help achieve low carbon emission.

The forum also discussed improvement in network, integrated, multi-model transport system, transit-oriented development and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in its sessions. Panel discussions were held on transportation demand management policy and measures. It was made clear in the forum that Surat needs to focus on low carbon and high volume transport system.

Thennarasan told TOI, “It was a recognition for the city because we could give a presentation on sustainable design and development- role of environmentally sustainable transport. We need to adopt low carbon and high volume transport system.” tnn
