Sensex closes 175 points in red\, Nifty stays above 10\,300

NEW DELHI: Equity markets saw a choppy day of trading on Tuesday, with benchmark indices closing with significant losses.

30-share BSE Sensex lost 174.99 points to close at 34,299.47 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty finished at 10,301, down 47 points.

A little after mid-day, the markets had stabilised at previous closing levels after being volatile till then. However, in the last 30 minutes, Sensex and Nifty saw heavy losses.

The FMCG and Auto sectors tanked the most, the respective sub-indices lost more than 2 per cent each. The Tata Motors stock plunged to near 7-year lows. Metal and pharma stocks firmed up during the day.

The rupee meanwhile, slipped to yet another low of 74.28 against the US dollar.
