Australia collapse as first Test against Pakistan slips away
Pakistan 1st innings 482; Australia 1st innings 5-180
Dubai: An all-too-familiar Australian batting collapse has undone a promising first-innings start and left the visitors in an almighty battle to save the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai.
Australia were precariously placed at 5-180 at tea on day three, trailing Pakistan by 302 runs, after losing 5-29 in a disastrous middle session on Tuesday.
Tim Paine was unbeaten on six and Mitch Marsh 10 not out, with the visitors' hopes of salvation now resting on the shoulders of their captain and vice-captain.
Test debutant Aaron Finch (62) and Usman Khawaja (85) had both appeared on track for centuries after putting on Australia's second-highest opening partnership in Asia.
Pakistan offspinner Bilal Asif did the damage in his maiden Test, claiming four straight wickets for figures of 4-28 as Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne both made ducks on debut.
Marsh was lucky to still be at the crease at tea after Yasir Shah failed to get his hands to a caught-and-bowled opportunity while the Australian was on three.
The ace legspinner, who remained wicketless at tea, dropped to his haunches in pain after the ball ricocheted heavily off his chest.
Some shrewd tactics from Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed brought Finch and Khawaja's 142-run stand to an end as Finch drove a Mohammad Abbas delivery straight down the throat of a well-positioned Asad Shafiq at short mid-on.
Shaun Marsh (seven) came in at No.3 but never looked settled, holing out to Shafiq at first slip with an ill-judged stroke to a Bilal delivery which deviated away from the left-hander.
Khawaja's growing confidence in conditions he had typically struggled in was on display when he reverse-swept Yasir for four off consecutive deliveries.
But the promoted opener also fell poorly to Bilal on 85 with a top-edge caught at short leg.
Head lasted just nine balls and Labuschagne two as Australia's hopes of matching or bettering Pakistan's imposing first-innings total of 482 slipped away.
Australia have only won on three occasions in Test cricket after conceding at least 482 runs in the first innings.
