The Central Industrial Security Force has not been officially communicated about the ‘Digi Yatra’ facility that is supposed to be rolled out by February next year, its Director General said on Monday. The CISF guards 60 major airport terminals of the country.
“We have not been officially communicated about ‘Digi Yatra’. There are many other stakeholders in the programme before it comes to the CISF. We will move as per the communication from the higher authorities. We are capable of implementing the facility,” said CISF DG Rajesh Ranjan.
A biometric-enabled digital processing of passengers, ‘Digi Yatra’ will enable travellers to enter the airport building by scanning a QR code on their mobile phones after undergoing facial recognition. From the airport entry gate to the boarding area, it would be a paperless or digital process. However, travellers would still have to undergo mandatory security checks, including frisking.
Mr. Ranjan said after two rounds of body scanner trials at the IGI airport in Delhi, another more advanced body scanner has now been installed on a trial basis; the previous body scanners were unable to scan passengers below the knee area.
“We have given our recommendations to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Union Home Ministry to procure advanced technology gadgets for passenger safety,” Mr. Ranjan added.
