Prominent Indian-American NGO SEWA International USA has received a grant of USD 15,000 to help at-risk high school students improve their grades in science, math and english.
This is the third consecutive year that Eaton Charitable Fund has awarded the grant of USD 15,000 to support Sewa International's ASPIRE (Active Student Participation Inspires Real Engagement) Tutorial and Mentoring Program in Cleveland.
Sewa International has one of the lowest overhead expenses of a charitable organisation in the country as its leadership takes no salary, and most of the work is done by volunteers, Rogerio Branco, executive vice president at Eaton, said.
He presented the check to Dr Hira Fotedar from SEWA International USA, at a ceremony in Beachwood, Ohio.
Although the Sewa ASPIRE program began by assisting Bhutanese refugee children in 2009, the programme has seamlessly been adapted to the needs of the high school students of Cleveland, many of whom are from economically disadvantaged homes and communities, Branco said.
Praising the Sewa International team for excellent progress achieved by ASPIRE in the last two years at the Euclid High School and the Garfield Heights High School, Branco said 10 students, who received tutorial help to improve their grades, graduated from high school and went to college with scholarships.
