Mescom to leverage automation\, focus on central schemes\, says new MD

Mangaluru: Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd will leverage benefit of Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) to roll out automated solutions for its customer’s benefit, Snehal Rayamane, managing director of the state-owned power distribution company, said.
Mescom with jurisdiction over DK, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagalur districts has already selected towns under R-APDRP, she said.

A 2013 batch IAS officer, this is the first stint in energy department for Snehal, a post-graduate degree holder in psychology from Bangalore University. Having served as CEO of Dharwad Zilla Panchayat prior to her current assignment, Snehal who assumed charge as MD on Tuesday told TOI she will first understand needs of Mescom before listing her priorities. “Mescom will explore rolling out automated solutions under R-APDRP,” she added.

The other thrust area, Snehal said will be to expedite implementation of the Union government’s flagship schemes — Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and Saubhagya, which aims to supply electricity to all households across India by December 2018, providing free connections to the poor and at very low cost to others. “I have learnt that Mescom is slightly lagging behind in implementing these schemes,” Snehal noted.

Acknowledging that Mescom is better performing Discom in Karnataka after Bescom, Snehal said the effort will also to come up with ways and means to become still better. “Steps will be taken to strengthen systems so that each and every customer of Mescom gets reliable and qualitative power supply,” she said, adding regional disparities that exist within the company in general and in Dakshina Kannada district in particular, will be addressed.

Mescom will also strive to strike better coordination with all other departments, especially the revenue department so that all pending power projects including laying power transmission lines, setting up sub-stations in the four districts are fast tracked, she said. The company at present requires 650MW or 12 million power units per day against its entitlement of 565MW and is managing the load without causing any pressure on the grid, Snehal added.
