Numma Oonu, the hunger-free city project initiated by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, is all set to get a technological upgrade. Mr. Safirulla will inaugurate the dedicated web portal for the project at the District Collectorate on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m.

The project ensuring free lunch to the needy was launched on Republic Day last year.

In the initial stages, 100 coupons were handed out daily from the counters set up at the Collectorate and Ernakulam Junction railway station against which lunch was served free by selected hotels.

With the project turning a success, it was expanded in due course with 39 more hotels coming on board from July 1 even as the number of counters for distribution of coupons for free meals was increased to 20. The project was then expanded to cover the entire district during the second phase rolled out on May 11 and the number of coupons distributed soared to 300 before being enhanced to 500 coupons in the third phase.
