After hundreds of women in India took to Twitter to speak of their experiences of sexual harassment in Indian newsrooms, the Editors Guild of India has, in a statement, expressed concern over the predatory behaviour of men in newsrooms and has urged media organisations to hold unbiased inquiries into all reported cases.
The statement signed by Shekhar Gupta, AK Bhattacharya and Sheela Bhatt said, "It unequivocally condemns all predatory conduct by such men. It is worse when the perpetrators also happen to be enjoying senior or supervisory positions in the profession."
"The Guild also expresses its gratitude and solidarity towards women journalists who have displayed the courage to bring these critical issues in public debate," the statement read.
Many journalists in newsrooms across India were named by women on Twitter as their assaulters. One of them turned out to be former editor and now MP and Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar.
Journalist Priya Ramani outed him in a tweet last evening linking to a story that she had written for
Vogue in 2017 recounting her her experience with him.
Earlier on Monday, Politics Editor and Delhi Chief of Bureau of the Prashant Jha stepped down from both the positions after he was accused by another journalist of sending her inappropriate messages.
