Madras High Court Judges M. M. Sundresh, Pushpa Sathyanarayana and N. Sathish Kumar inspected the Madurai District Court complex on Tuesday after the continuous rain in the city resulted in inundation of the campus.

The Judges, along with Principal District and Sessions Judge A. Nazeema Banu and Chief Judicial Magistrate L. S. Sathiamurthy, inspected the campus. They directed the PWD Officials, who were present during the inspection, to pump the stagnant water out immediately, as an interim measure. As a permanent measure, the judges sought a plan for draining stormwater into the Vandiyur tank.

The judges also mooted a new entrance for the district court near the MGR statue, a culvert to allow the flow of water and a plan to harvest rainwater by building a retaining wall. Earlier, the PWD, following the High Court Bench’s order, removed the encroachments along the Melur Road that were blocking the water from flowing into the drainage system.

The PWD also submitted an estimate for construction of a retaining wall for water harvesting.
