NEW DELHI: A multi-stakeholder meeting has been called by civic authorities on Tuesday to decide whether a plot of land in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar should be used as a park or a parking lot, officials said on Monday.

SDMC's area councillor Nandini Sharma said, "The plot should be developed as a park and even local people wish the same. The engineering department want to use the site as a parking lot."

"In the meeting, we would suggest them to use an alternate plot for the parking lot, instead of using this space in New Market area, which we have intended to use as a park in consonance with an overall greening project," she told PTI.

Deputy Commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Nidhi Srivatava said the issue will be discussed in the meeting with all stakeholders, including civic authorities and members of RWAs, to resolve it.

"Let us see what comes out of the meeting," she said.

Malviya Nagar has two marketing spaces - the Old Market and the New Market, and greening and beautification work is already over in the Old Market area while it is underway in the new one.

Members of the New Market Association had sent a letter to SDMC Commissioner P K Goel in September, seeking usage of the plot as a park.

"As members of the New Market, we want to have a park developed there and not a parking lot. We hope good sense will prevail in the meeting," Amarbir Singh, a member of the association said.

"The work had already started on the park, out of the local area councillor's fund, but the authorities has later asked to discontinue it," he alleged.

Councillor Sharma is also against the idea of having a parking lot at the site where the park is intended to be developed.

"The approach road is very narrow, and so it will lead to traffic jam if used a parking lot. Instead, we have suggested to the engineering department, an alternate site, like the taxi stand nearby, for constructing the parking lot.

"We want to take the park proposal forward, as part of the overall greening project of the two market areas," Sharma said.

The councillor said as part of the greening project, green belts are being created, and Victorian-style benches and lamp posts have been installed on the pavements on both sides in the market area.
