Turkish officials are racing to find out exactly what happened to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

As the world demands answers about his fate.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FOUNDER OF A CONFLICT ADVISORY, INSIGHT INTO CRISIS, MOHAMED OKDA, SAYING: "We would like to know exactly what happened and bring those involved to justice." Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi policies, entered his consulate for paperwork last Tuesday.

He hasn't been seen since.

Turkish officials told Reuters they believed he was killed inside the consulate and have asked for permission to search it.

President Tayyip Erdogan's only comment so far is that he's closely following the case.

Reuters Turkey Bureau chief, Dominic Evans was shown around the consulate this weekend as Saudi officials continue to insist that talk of his kidnapping is baseless.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) REUTERS TURKEY BUREAU CHIEF, DOMINIC EVANS, SAYING: "They took us from the top to the bottom of the building, it is a four-storey building, it was obviously an usual event they said they had never before opened their doors in such a way it clearly was an usual move for them and it reflected their efforts from their perspective to show that stories or rumors that Jamal Khashoggi had been adducted or was being held inside the consulate were not true." Saudi officials insist Khashoggi left shortly after he entered but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, says he never came out.

Camera footage and airport records are being examined as part of Turkey's investigation.

Questions are also being asked about the Saudi 15.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) REUTERS TURKEY BUREAU CHIEF, DOMINIC EVANS, SAYING: "Turkish sources have said that there are 15 Saudi nationals that they want to look in to who arrived in Istanbul on Tuesday the day that Jamal Khashoggi went to the consulate and went missing they say they arrived in Istanbul in two separate planes they were in the city around the time he went in to the consulate and they left on the same day they haven't given any information about those people, they haven't given us details about where or when they arrived but they said they are trying to find out more about that possible team of people." Khashoggi left the country last year fearing retribution for his stories criticising Saudi policy and its crackdown on dissent.

He's now the one making headlines.
