NAVI MUMBAI: Blasting operations for the upcoming international airport in Navi Mumbai led to chaos in Ulwe village on Monday after rocks and stones hit a school and several houses.

"The children were in the next room during the lunch break when rocks landed in the school premises and some houses," said Pundalik Mhatre, the head of a coordinating committee of four villages formed for rehabilitation of displaced people of Ulwe, Targhar, Ganeshpuri and Kombadbhuje.

"We dialed 100 and the police reached the spot. Around 10 to 15 houses took a hit. A police case has been filed." Mhatre said.

The blasting operations are being carried out by San Jose-GVK in the Ulwe hill area, the site of the international airport.

"During the blasting, few rocks fell in the vicinity of Ulwe village. However, no one was injured," a GVK spokesperson said.

Cidco had given the task of monitoring the hill operation work to MIAL in July this year. MIAL took over the work for speedy implementation of the pre-development works and put pressure on Cidco to vacate the 10 villages in the core airport area.
