Academy to preserve works of the late violinist

The Kerala State Chalachithra Academy will adopt steps to preserve the music of violinist Balabhaskar, academy chairman Kamal has said.

Speaking at a meeting organised at the Manaveeyam Veedhi on Sunday in remembrance of the late musician, who died a few days ago, Mr. Kamal said no efforts would be spared in collecting his works. He also appealed to the public to contribute their collections to the academy for the benefit of aspiring musicians and the large number of enthusiasts, who adored the works of the violinist.

Mr. Kamal, who said that the tragedy was a personal loss for the State capital, pointed out that Balabhaskar was a musician who aspired to evolve new trends in music, presenting a touch of novelty in each of his works.

Playback singer G. Venugopal reminisced about Balabhaskar as a trailblazer who introduced the concept of instrumental fusion in the region at a time when the musical style was not in vogue. “Balu’s works, mostly off the beaten track, enabled him to carve a niche for himself. There will not be any who has heard him go out of tune during performances. Such was his dedication and meticulous preparation. He was a prodigy who achieved so much at a young age and had the potential of attaining greater heights. His loss is irreparable,” he said.

A prodigy

Cultural activist Soorya Krishnamoorthy said the Soorya festival, which had featured many cultural icons over the years, owed much of its appeal, especially during the early days, to its theme music composed by Balabhaskar. “He was definitely a prodigy, who far surpassed my expectations,” he said.

Singer Kavalam Sreekumar said Balabhaskar had spent his life for furthering the style of fusion music. At a time when most musicians aspired to break into the film industry, Balabhaskar was one who stood apart from the rest, all for his passion towards the violin.

Kerala State Chalachitra Academy secretary Mahesh Panju, filmmaker G.S. Vijayan, singers G. Sreeram and Preethi, and Manaveeyam Theruvidam Cultural Collective secretary K.G. Suraj spoke on the occasion.
