Cop accused of pulling down helmetless biker

CHANDIGARH: A motorcyclist had to be moved to the PGI after being allegedly pulled down by a traffic police constable near Delhi Public School in Sector 40 on Sunday evening for going without helmet.

Eyewitnesses say that seeing two traffic cops on the road, Palsora villager Deepak, 31, had tried to flee when the constable grabbed him. Police dismiss the allegation that he was pulled and say his motorcycle skidded in his attempt to escape the fine.

Head constable Dilbag Singh and constable Sandeep Kumar were checking traffic violation around the school when a helmetless Deepak, who works as a glass cutter in Sector 56, drove in from Sector 39 on a Hero Honda Splendor motorcycle. An eyewitness said: “After being pulled, the motorcyclist fell on his head. A crowd of passersby gathered around him and forced the cops to take him to hospital. The man lay in a pool of blood on for a good 20 minutes until the PCR (patrol squad) got there.” Deputy superintendent of police (public relations) Pawan Kumar claims that Deepak was discharged from PGI later in the night, and his employer and took him away. The DSP said: “All allegations are baseless. The motorcyclist tried to flee to avoid paying a fine and hurt himself in the attempt. Police were quick to move him to hospital.”
