The Supreme Court on Monday sought response of the Centre and Election Commission over a plea seeking implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi issued notices to the Union of India, Census Commissioner and Election Commission of India on a petition of Tripura People's Front.
The bench has tagged the latest PIL with Assam petitions.
This comes two days after Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday said that he will implement the NRC in his state on Centre's suggestion if the exercise is successful in Assam.
Speaking at the India Today Conclave East 2018, Deb said, "We should wait for the results from the Assam NRC and then see if we want to implement it in other states or not."
He said if the Centre decides to approach Tripura for an Assam-like NRC, he will take it forward but until then there is no such plan.
The Supreme-court monitored update of the NRC is an exercise to identify genuine Indian nationals residing in Assam. Millions of Bangladeshi immigrants are suspected to be living illegally in Assam and other north-eastern states and the issue has been highlighted by the BJP in every election.
A political controversy was triggered after the final draft list published on July 30 excluded more than 40 lakh people from the list. The Centre had on July 30 published a second draft NRC list of Assam in which out of 3.29 crore people, names of 2.89 crore were included. The first draft of the NRC for Assam was published on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1.
Assam, which has faced influx of people from Bangladesh since the early 20th century, is the only state having an NRC, which was first prepared in 1951.
