Man charged with murder after woman stabbed in Rockingham

Homicide squad detectives have charged a 37-year-old man with murder after a woman who was stabbed in the neck in Rockingham on Saturday night has died in hospital.

It's understood the woman was a social worker and had been attending a house for work before she was attacked.

The woman is believed to have then driven herself to Dome Cafe on the Rockingham Esplanade for assistance.

Customers at the cafe were witness to confronting scenes, when the woman stumbled into the restaurant with serious injuries to her neck, bleeding severely.

She was then taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital via St John Ambulance, but later died as a result of her injuries.

The Dome cafe told customers on Sunday via Facebook it would remain closed until Tuesday morning to give their staff "time and space to collect their thoughts".

"Apologies for the inconvenience," it posted.

The man will front Rockingham Magistrates Court on Monday.

Carolyn Smith, WA state secretary for United Voice, told 9 News Perth home visits presented a real problem for workers in the care sector.

"They are going into someone's home, they don't have control of the environment, and it is potentially a very dangerous environment.

She said workers should be visiting patients in pairs.

"[Our mental health system] is at breaking point. We see that in hospitals, we've seen it in emergency departments and unfortunately we've now seen it over the weekend."

Ms Smith said the sector needed funding to keep workers safe by pairing them up.
