Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has talked to his Gujarat counterpart Vijay Rupani expressing concern over the attack on Biharis in the northwestern state. He has urged Gujaratis to not stereotype people hailing from a state or an area based on the crime committed by one person.
Talking to reporters after a state government event in Patna on Monday, Nitish said, "Our government is alert. I spoke to the Gujarat CM on Sunday and they have said they are keeping an eye on the situation and are trying to contain it. Senior officials of both state governments are in touch and are taking stock of the situation."
The Bihar CM condemned the alleged sexual assault of the baby girl in Gujarat and said, "Those who have committed such a crime should definitely punished severely. However, branding the whole community because of the deeds of one person and harbouring such feelings against the people from other states is not right."
Large-scale violence against migrant workers hailing from Bihar and other states, were triggered in Gujarat following the rape of a 14-month-old baby girl by a Bihari worker. Several migrants headed for their native state fearing for their lives. Sources said the attacks intensified following the circulation of hate messages. The Gujarat Police arrested over 300 people in connection with the incidents.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MLC Neeraj Kumar penned a letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi seeking disciplinary action against Congress leader Alpesh Thakur and his organisation 'Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena' for "inciting violence against people of Bihar in Gujarat". "People from Bihar and other states have contributed to the development you see in Gujarat. Then, why do your workers harbour such hatred against them?" he asked.
Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said why were the attacks not stopping when BJP is in power at the Centre and all the concerned states. Madhepura MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav said if the attacks on people from Bihar do not stop, it will mean that no one from Gujarat can enter Bihar for any purpose either.
