Land-grabbing behind Sabarmati attacks?

AHMEDABAD: After 17 migrants fled from their homes in JP Chawl and Gopaldas Chawl in Sabarmati near the riverfront, police began a probe on all aspects of the case including the motive to grab their land.

A top police official said that the migrants had been living for 15 to 20 years in the chawls owned by Thakors. They had been asked to vacate their homes earlier but did not as they had no other place to go. The attacks made them leave.

"In the near future, the land will provide lucrative premium to the people living there. To get the premium, a particular community attacked the migrant tenants to grab their houses," said a police official.

During his visit after the attacks, deputy commissioner of police Jaypalsinh Rathod instructed his subordinates to write to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to get the details of the settlement. Joint commissioner of police Amit Vishwakarma said that police have begun an investigation on the land-grab angle.
