Graft accused PSI denied bail

Vadodara: Graft accused sub-inspector of Jawahar Nagar police station was denied bail by the district court on Monday. Accused cop Indrajitsinh Sarvaiya was caught on September 26 for accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a bootlegger.
Sarvaiya had sought bail from court on October 1 stating that he has been wrongly booked in the case.

The cop argued in the court that the complainant has made up a story. He argued that since Upendra alias Rakesh Gohil was a habitual offender and was also detained under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (Pasa) Act he had submitted a complaint so that Sarvaiya could be deterred from performing his duties for maintaining law and order.

However, the additional public prosecutor K P Chavan argued that there is prima facie case against Sarvaiya as phenolphthalein powder was found in his hand which was applied to currency notes by the anti-corruption bureau. It was also argued that Sarvaiya being a cop may use his position to influence others involved in the case.

The court of principal district and sessions judge rejected Sarvaiya’s arguments and rejected his bail plea.

Sarvaiya had taken bribe amount to not beat the complainant in the police custody and had also demanded another Rs 4 lakh to not arrest the complainant’s brother in the same case.
