CHENNAI: A low pressure system in the
Arabian Sea has gained strength and become a cyclonic storm called Luban (named by Oman; meaning frankincense).
"The cyclonic storm over west central and adjoining south-west Arabian Sea moved west-north-westwards with a speed of about 11kmph and lay centred over west-central & adjoining southwest Arabian Sea about 970km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman), 860km east of Socotra Islands (Yemen) and 1,320km west-northwest of Minicoy,” said India Meteorological Department on Monday.
“It is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and move west-north-westwards towards south Oman and Yemen coasts during next five days," the
IMD said.
Though system is moving away, yet parts of
Kerala and Tamil Nadu’s districts along the Western Ghats would receive rain for the next 24 hours, said the IMD.
The sea condition is high around the system centre. It is very likely to become gradually very high over west-central Arabian Sea.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas of the west-central Arabian Sea from Monday to October 12, adjoining south-west Arabian sea during next 48 hours and adjoining areas of southeast and east central Arabian Sea during next 24 hours.
