Violence against North Indians continues in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: While city police claim to have brought the anti-migrant violence under control through community meetings and flag marches, there was no respite for migrants, who continued to come under attack on Monday. At least eight attacks on migrants were witnessed in the city on Monday, said police officials.

The first incident occurred in Vadaj, where a 39-year-old pani puri vendor, Sarvesh Prajapati, was beaten by five persons. Prajapati was first asked how he could make his living in Gujarat and was then beaten. His handcart was also vandalized, causing him a loss of Rs 700.

Police officials said seven incidents of violence were reported in eastern parts of the city — four in Sardarnagar, two in Hansol and one in Shahibaug. In Shahibaug, migrants were attacked near Ghoda Camp, which has a heavy presence of police, said a police official. DCP Zone 1 Ashok Yadav confirmed the incidents and said stern action would be taken and that more than 50 persons were arrested.
