Mason Crosby on five missed kicks: “Uncharted territory”

Getty Images

Packers kicker Mason Crosby had a very bad day in Sunday’s 31-23 loss to the Lions.

Crosby missed four field goals and an extra point over the course of the afternoon. After the game, Crosby said that he’d never had a day like that before.

“I’ve done this a long time and I’ve never had a game like that,” Crosby said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. “This is uncharted territory.”

Crosby had two misses on the year heading into Sunday and he missed a total of six kicks all of last season.

“Every attempt I felt like I was in rhythm going through it,” Crosby said, via Josh Tolentino of The Atlhletic. “It was one of those days that just wasn’t there. I’ve done this a long time, and I’ve never had a day where it wasn’t there like that. We’ll look at it, look at every facet of it and flush it.”

Kickers have been let go for less than Crosby managed on Sunday, but he has been in Green Bay since 2007 and one terrible outing probably doesn’t wipe away the rest of that run as long as things return to normal next time out.

  1. Wouldn’t have had to kick field goals in the first place if your qb wasn’t playing like dog poop all game before padding his stats in the 4th quarter.

  2. It was horrible to watch! I reckon the Packers are keeping him as well though.

I would feel sorry for Rodgers, but.. Meh

  3. One of the greatest kickers in NFL history…I think he’ll be ok. It was probably just his socks or the holders fault. No big deal. Packers will be okay, there’s a reason why almost all the experts in the media had them ranked #1 in their power rankings.

  4. He’s a career 80% field goal kicker. He made 63% of his field goals in 2012. Green Bay allows this guy a really long leash. Other teams would have cut him long ago…

  5. Hasn’t Crosby been one of the worst kickers only to have a marginal improvement as of late? I’m so happy to see the Cheese Cheaters sinking in the morass of Erin Rogers’ arrogance.

    +++++

Other teams play in domes/warm weather. Many kickers lose distance outdoors on grass, Crosby does not.

Now if you ask me about how much he’s making, that’s a different story.

  7. Crosby had this happen one other time in his career where he lost his confidence. Clearly today, that was the case. But he needn’t feel too badly because the rest of the team stunk, too.

  8. The Vikings had another roughing the QB penalty in their favor today which was a b.s. call. It helped them beat the Eagles. Horrible call!!!!

  9. As a 40 year Vikes fan I actually feel bad for the guy as he has been so good over his entire career, what can you do but forget about it and move on, hopefully he can just leave it in the past much better than Blair Walsh ever did. The Vikes have felt this pain way to often to come on this site and talk smack.

  10. Had the Vikings not benefited by another horrible call for roughing Cousins, they’d have lost to the Eagles and none of these Vikings trolls would be running their mouths about the Packers.
And honestly, I don’t care if the Packers don’t win another game all year as long as they beat the Vikings in their house later in the season.
At this point of the season, the Vikings stink and so do the Packers. They are both 2-2-1. Neither one of them will even get to the Super Bowl. So laugh all you want Vikings trolls, you’ll be crying again at the end of the season as you have been doing for the whole history of the Vikings.

What good is not losing distance if he’s still inaccurate?

Dan Bailey, Robbie Gould, and Matt Prater are career 83, 87, and 88% career kickers respectively. And they’ve all had to find new homes.

The Packers are to blame for paying such a bad kicker so much money.

  12. He looked like he had a lot of gray hair when the cameras showed him on the sidelines, how old is he ? Suffice it to say his best days are probably behind him, age has robbed him of his ability to nail those kicks anymore.

  13. And honestly, I don’t care if the Packers don’t win another game all year as long as they beat the Vikings in their house later in the season.

    ++++++

Going 1-10 down the stretch would make you happy?

Let’s revisit this next session. We can work on goal-setting.

  14. NyNeal- you like to cry about the refs a lot maybe you would be more comfortable watching figure skating. The penalty against the Eagles today did not negate a turnover and it would have been third down. That doesn’t make a win for the other team.

I guess it has been awhile since the Packers won a game in Minnesota.

But to be willing to go 1 – 10 the rest of the season is so like that dark 25 year period when the Viking/Packer game was the Packers Super Bowl.

    Back to the Future…😎🤣🤩

  26. They need to look at other kickers next year. They can probably get through with Crosby for the time being. When I saw him with his helmet off and his gray hair, I knew immediately the problem.

In all walks of life and occupations, when you’ve been doing the same thing for a long time, applied skills become rote. You’re still very good and among the best available, but you lose your fire in the belly and the naturally aspirated focus that comes with it. It can be sales, management, fabrication, you name it……….the best people all reach a point where they become comfortable with their experience and position and they take their foot of the gas. Nothing against old people……….I’m one of them.

    That’s what I saw today.

Do,you have any idea what your misplaced logic sounds like to a Packer fan that has enjoyed real Packer SuperBowls? Try this on for size: The only Viking victories that have ever given Viking fans any level of excitement or statisfaction close to that of a legitimate team-earned SuperBowl victory, are the occasional victories over the Packers. Name something else!

    Sorry. It’s not vice-versa.

  33. There is a theme running with this team.

It seems like every week you can find players that dont have it together. Not mentally prepared.

    Missed kicks, drops, missed assignments?

Looks like the coach doesnt have a good handle on this team at the moment.

From the 1967 Super Bowl through the end of the 1979 season – the Packer beat the Vikings 4 times. It was during this era where the game against the Vikings WAS the Packers Super Bowl. Four wins out of 24 games…

Only one of those seasons did the Packers have over 8 wins.

Yes, I know that in the 1980 – 1992 the Packers managed to hit a 50/50 win loss record against the Vikings. I’m happy for you. The team still rarely won more than 8 games in a year – but they got to claim a few more “Super Bowl” victories over the Vikings during that time.

Did I ever mention that the Packers failed to score a TD in the playoffs of a full regulation season over that stretch (1968 – 1992)?

  35. Game like yesterday can be a positive long term.

Of course the 13 missed points by Mason is a headline, but the officials spotting the Lions 7 points to start the game and Aaron’s 2 fumbles were just as costly. One can’t be controlled and the other 2 are fixable.

First half was a obvious disaster and had a chance to win the game in the 2nd half and didn’t get it done.

A team can take a game like this one of two ways. The Packers will grow from this and become closer/stronger.

Time to get ready for Monday Night. No time wasted on negative energy. In sports and in life you surround yourself with only positive people and that leads you to only positive things.

    ======

79.77 FG% for his career… 22nd among active kickers….. only 22 qualify presently, making him DEAD LAST for all you math majors out there..

    He’s 55th all-time.

He might be the best kicker in franchise history.. most definitely NOT an all-time great. By any standard.

Lying Old Goat………I’m so glad this subject gets so far under your skin. All is not lost. The Vikings still have another “SuperBowl” opportunity at home this season on Thanksgiving weekend.

You got that going for you. In the meantime, Packer fans will embrace and remember four real ones. Note the difference.

  38. What’s the old joke? NFL stands for Not for Long. Pro football is a results business and the Packers have to be scratching their heads wondering what to do next? Forget the cap hit and who would replace Crosby, both are questions for another day. How much rope do you give this guy?

I like to look at the bright side, maybe it will take a bad day from your normally reliable kicker and one or two other anomalies to finally clear out the “successful football coach” who has done very little other than riding the coattails of Favre and Rodgers.

  39. Watching the Packers/Lions highlights is pure comedy.

Crosby made the last FG in garbage time, so all is good, right? He and Carlson should become pen pals.

  40. @the quitter…

It doesn’t get under my skin, but obviously gets under your skin.

Probably because you remember taking deep pride in those rare wins during those dark years.

While I agree it may be time for this head coach to move on, I disagree with you on one point.

Favre was junk balling for Sherman before Mccarthy came in and righted his ship.
Rodgers was brought up by Mccarthy.

He did not ride their coattails, he definitely influenced and was part of the their success.

What he is now is not a bad QB coach but a terrible game manager, who seems like he’s overcompensating at every corner, but yet has no clue how to get his team “up” for a game. Why does someone on this team, on a weekly basis, find a way to play bad enough to influence the outcome? The coach doesn’t have them ready to play. These non-existent preseasons are his call and play into some of these early season garbage showings.

Why do they sleep walk through first halves of football? Then play catch up and “almost” play competitively enough to win at the end? That is 100% on the head coach and he will be gone this year if he doesn’t figure it out. He may be gone already no matter how it ends.

He is a damn good QB coach. May not be a head coach or playcaller…..

Mason will be fine. Like so many of the Packer greats, he’s got that Superbowl pedigree.
    __________

Turns out that Super Bowl pedigree doesn’t mean jack squat when it comes to winning games being played right now.

  43. Favre was junk balling for Sherman before Mccarthy came in and righted his ship.
Rodgers was brought up by Mccarthy.
    =====

Sherman did a solid job with Favre.

Made him work to overcome the elbow issue he was having
Got 2 MVP-caliber years out of him
Got him to buy into a run-first scheme in 2003 with Batman and that great O-line

QB rating with Sherman – 83.1 (85.4 if you toss out the 2005 Ted nuke year)
QB rating with McCarthy – 83.4

Best season under Sherman – 3921 yards, 32 tds, 15 int, 94.1 rating
Best season under McCarthy – 4155 yards, 28 tds, 15 int, 95.7 rating

Holmgren was the only coach that ultimately had Favre under control.

  44. Looks like McCarthy is losing this team. Slow starts, the offensive scheme is looking stale, special teams are bad. Turnovers, dumb penalties. A taunting penalty on a stop that would have gotten the defense off the field cost them a couple of minutes of valuable clock time. I think a new regime is in order.

Green Bay scored more points in the first 53 minutes of Super Bowl history than the Vikings have in 51 years.

No wonder why you obsess over meaningless, cherry-picked stats.
