6 booked for defaming girl\, let off with warning

CHENNAI: The Kotturpuram police registered a nuisance case on Sunday against six men, who allegedly shared photos and defamatory audio messages about a teenage girl on a WhatsApp group. They were later let off with a stern warning.

A 35-year-old woman lodged a complaint at the Kotturpuram police station stating that a few men clicked photos of her 15-year-old daughter several days ago. In the complaint, she said these men shared the girl’s photographs along with her mobile number on a social media site and tagged her a ‘call girl’. The message further invited those interested to call the number, she said.

Based on the complaint, police detained six men including, Deepak, 25, Sanjay, 23, Rahul, 26, Benny, 26, and Silvan, 25. All the accused hailed from the same locality.

Investigations revealed that, Benny, from Velachery, had reportedly sent the audio message to defame the girl. In the message, he claimed that the girl was in love with him and later ditched him. He had also mentioned the name and place of her residence and asked people to be cautious about the girl. He sent her photo with a message saying ‘booking and sales’.

Police said, they suspect that Benny might have spread the messages because the girl refused to respond to his overtures.

After sharing the messages, he also simultaneously informed the girl’s mother that someone was spreading false messages about her daughter on WhatsApp. Panicked over this, the mother lodged a complaint.

“We checked their mobile phones and found a few WhatsApp audio messages. We booked them for nuisance and later let them off with a warning,” said an investigating officer.
