PATNA: Thirty-four girl students of a residential school in Bihar had to pay a heavy price on Saturday evening for opposing routine sexual advances made by some local youths.

The girls were thrashed so badly by the boys, their family members and residents of Darpakha village in the Supaul district that they had to be hospitalised. Two are critical. The mob had a free run, vandalising the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), a residential school for girls belonging to SC, ST, OBC and minority communities. Only two arrests were made till the time of going to press.

Girls at KGBV alleged that some youths of Darpakha often harassed them sexually and passed lewd comments. The girls confronted some of the youths on Saturday and the violence was in retaliation of this act, they added.

Supaul DM Baidya Nath Yadav said some of the girls confronted a few local youths and some Middle School students for writing vulgar messages on the school’s wall. “Both KGBV and Middle School are on the same campus with separate buildings but a common playground. When the girls confronted the youths, they sexually harassed them, following which the girls beat them up. Later in the evening, the boys called their parents and got the girls bashed up,” Yadav said.

The school's wall.

KGBV hostel warden Reema told TOIthat the students were playing in the campus when the attack happened. "Suddenly, they started screaming. When I went out, I saw around 15 people, both men and women, thrashing the girls with sticks and rods. I alerted the security guard and called up the local administration. But the miscreants had fled," she said.

Supaul SP Mrityunjay Kumar Choudhary told TOI that KGBV authorities had named nine people in their complaint. “Two have been arrested while four others have been detained for interrogation,” he said.
