Mild tension prevailed at Yakutpura area in old city late on Saturday night when a group of minority community raised objection over the alleged ‘derogatory remarks’ made by Brother Imran, president of Islamic Research and Education Foundation.

He was the key speaker at a mosque at Etebar Chowk during a religious meeting on Saturday.

Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ambar Kishore Jha said Brother Imran, during his talk, reportedly made some remarks against Ahle Sunnatul Jammat and Shia Muslims.

Tense moments

“Members of Shia group, who are observing matham, got offended by his statements and demanded action against him,” he said. Around midnight, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Tarun Joshi and other top officials of the Police Department rushed to the spot to control the situation, as over 2,000 members of Shia group had gathered outside the mosque, raising slogans.

Around 2 a.m., police detained Brother Imran and following a complaint, they booked him under Section 295 (A) (Deliberate and Malicious Acts, Intended to Outrage Religious Feelings of Any Class by Insulting its Religion or Religious Beliefs) and 505 (3) (Offence Under Sub-Section Committed in Place of Worship) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Late on Sunday, he was produced before the magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody of 14 days at Chanchalguda central prison here.
