LUDHIANA: Car-borne assailants opened fire at the car of a Congress leader on
Malerkotla road on Friday evening. The bullet hit a window of his car, but Congress leader Amandeep Singh and his friends escaped unhurt in the incident.
Police claimed that old rivalry was the reason behind the attack.
The Dehlon police have registered a case against Gurpreet Singh Gill Kalkatte Wala, brother of Fatesh Gill Mani, and his unidentified accomplices.
New Janta Nagar-based Amandeep Singh, 35, a block-level leader of the party, claimed he was going towards Malerkotla road in his
Toyota Innova car after attending a party meeting in the Circuit House on Friday evening. Three motorcycle-borne unidentified men intercepted his car near Gill village, but he picked up speed to avoid them.
Amandeep said, “I was going to Dehlon to see my friend. When I reached near the village, an i-10 car intercepted us again. The accused opened fire at me. However, the bullet hit the window of the car and I escaped unhurt.”
ASI Balbir Singh, who is investigating the case, said the accused opened fire at Amandeep Singh following an old rivalry. The police have registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of IPC and section 25/54/59 of Arms Act against the accused.
In another incident, two motorcycle-borne assailants fired multiple times at a man in Lalton village late on Friday evening. Manjinder Singh, who a supporter of
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), sustained bullet injuries on face and stomach. He was rushed to a private hospital.
The kin of injured alleged that some Congress supporters in the village were behind the attack. Following a complaint, Sadar police have booked Parminder Singh of Lalton and two unidentified men under charges of attempt to murder.
Condition of Manjinder, 45, is stated to be critical.
ADCP-II Surendra Lamba said the victim and suspects were old rivals. They were involved in a scuffle in April after which a cross FIR was lodged against them.
