Body formed by NGT to file report on Oct 15

LUDHIANA: For curbing the pollution level in Satluj, Beas and other rivers of the state, officials from municipal corporation (MC), Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Punjab health systems corporation of Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mullanpur, Beas and Dasuya have been asked to submit their plans by October 15. The monitoring committee formed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) conducted their a meeting on Saturday. Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal was also as a member of the committee.

The officials were put to task by Seechewal for not showing any changes in the status of pollution level in water bodies and drains. They have been asked to come up with plans to reduce the level of pollution in the water bodies. This was the fourth meeting conducted by the members of monitoring committee, and they are required to submit a final report on October 15 giving a record of the steps taken by them in bringing down the pollution level of the water bodies.

The MC officials will submit their plan to upgrade the sewerage treatment plants in Balloke, Jamalpur and Bhattian, while PPCB will give the plan about the completion of common effluent treatment plants for treatment of waste water coming from dyeing units. Similarly other departments have been asked to submit their plans in a given time frame.

Seechewal after the meeting visited the effluent treatment plant at Focal Point to see its functioning.
