Tirupur: Thanks to a pact signed by the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood mission (Tnsrlm), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) and the Tirupur Exporters Association, more people from rural areas will be trained in apparel sector.
Under the pact, rural people from the below poverty line (BPL) families will be trained in technical and managerial jobs in apparel industry. NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion will train them. “The candidates will be trained in skills, which are in demand such as apparel machine engineers under the six-month training programme. As per the MoU, the trained candidates will be absorbed by knitwear unit members of TEA,” state programme manager of Tnsrlm G Kumaran told TOI.

“The project will also monitor the trained candidates after they are placed in companies. They will be tracked up to one year. Their career-based problems will be monitored and needed support will be given. TEA will ensure that the candidates get the minimum wages and job security. Since DDU-GKY is being implemented across the country, trained candidates from other states could also seek help of TEA for jobs,” the official said.

TEA president Raja M Shanmugham called it a win-win situation for the candidates, the government and also the knitwear industry. “The rural candidates will get job opportunities while the companies will get skilled candidates. For the government, the rural people’s livelihood and the economy could be developed.”
