GUWAHATI: Cotton University Students' Union (CUSU) polls were held peacefully on Saturday amid high polling percentage of 67, even as a candidate and his supporter had to be hospitalized on Friday night after miscreants attacked them outside the university campus.
General secretary nominee Nabajit Dutta along with his close associate Trinayan Baruah were attacked near Japorigog area of the city late in the evening. They incurred minor injuries.

Polls in the leading state university witnessed a triangular fight between the All Assam Students' Union (Aasu), Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) and the NSUI this election.

Polling was held for 16 out of 18 posts in the CUSU polls since Saturday morning.

Amlan Jyoti Kalita, Bituprative Boruah, Brojen Phukan and Priyanka Nayak are the contenders for the president's post in the election, while Ditul Kalita, Hirakjyoti Bora, Pranjal Kalita and Nabajit Dutta are contesting for the coveted general secretary's post.

Aasu adviser at Cotton University, Jnanendra Kalita, said, "Though we (Aasu) enjoy majority in the present student union, this year all other competitors are tough. We will have to wait and watch."

Aasu registered a thumping win in the first ever CUSU election last year, winning 10 of 18 seats.
