Kolhapur boy Tushar Mane gave India their first medal at 2018 Youth Olympic Games by clinching silver in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting event on the opening day of the competition in Buenos Aires on Sunday.
The 16-year-old shot a total score of 247.5, giving him second spot behind Russia’s Grigorii Shamakov, who scored 249.2. Mane edged past the bronze medal winner — Aleksa Mitrovic of Serbia — by a mere 0.1 point, but shot 9.6 and 9.9 in the final round to settle for silver.
“He shot very well,” Suma Shirur, high performance coach of the Indian junior team (rifle), told DNA from Buenos Aires.
“He stayed very calm and focussed throughout, not just in the finals but also in the qualifying. He has a great temperament for a 16-year-old, and he will only go upwards from here,” she added.
