HYDERABAD: A 32-year-old jilted lover, who is married and working in Bahrain, immolated himself and set ablaze a 22-year-old beauty parlour worker for refusing to enter into a wedlock with him at her house in Tappachabutra on Saturday morning. Both suffered 90 per cent burns. While Shabana Begum succumbed to her injuries later in the day, Ibrahim is battling for his life. Shabana’s sister-inlaw, Ajeena Begum, 35, who tried to douse the flames, also suffered 60 per cent burns and is battling for her life. A case of murder and attempt to murder was slapped on Ibrahim.

“After dousing himself with kerosene, he entered the house, threw the fuel on Shabana and lit a match. Ibrahim and Shabana were engulfed in flames and Ajeena tried to help them but she also suffered injuries in the process,” west zone DCP AR Srinivas said. The accused and the victims were rushed to Osmania General Hospital where Shabana died later while undergoing treatment. Furniture was damaged owing to the fire. Ibrahim, who works in a private firm in Bahrain, came to the city a week ago.

Two years ago, Ibrahim came in contact with Shabana of Kummarwadi in Karwan on Facebook. Ibrahim wanted to marry Shabana and even spoke to her family members when he visited the city. “He wanted to marry my sister. When we made enquiries, we came to know that he had already married and has two children. We told him to stay away from Shabana. However, he contuinued to harass my sister. We lodged a complaint with police six months ago,” brother Sk Mustafa told TOI. Ibrahim’s wife along with their two children lives in Barkas.

Mustafa said Ibrahim and his family members were counselled by cops with a specific directive to stay away from Shabana. Ibrahim tried to contact Shabana to convince her for the marriage. “After failing in his attempts, he came to Shabana’s house at around 8.30 am and resorted to the extreme step,” police said.
