Teenager fighting for life after level crossing crash in Victoria's east

A teenage boy is fighting for his life in a Melbourne hospital after a car he was travelling in was hit by a V/Line train in the east of the state.

Police said the crash happened about 6.30pm on Friday at the Ligar Street crossing where a Traralgon-bound train was passing through.

The 17 year-old male passenger, and 19-year-old female driver were trapped in the car on the tracks for hour an hour before being cut free by emergency services.

The pair were flown to hospital, the male with injuries to his head, chest and pelvis, while the driver was treated for shock.

The teenage boy remained in a critical condition on Saturday morning, a Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman said.

None of the 38 passengers on board the V/Line Traralgon-bound train have reported any injuries.

There were no boom gates to bar traffic at the crossing, Victoria Police said, just light and sound signals.

Victoria Police said the train line would remain closed until Saturday morning while they carried out their investigation.
