Netflix's The Dark Crystal Prequel Will Honor the Original Film

We're not always totally enthused about a classic from our childhood getting polished up for a new take, but an update to Jim Henson's classic 1982 film The Dark Crystal? Yes please!

Netflix's prequel series, named The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, made its first major public appearance at New York Comic Con during Friday's Netflix & Chills panel. The Jim Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson, daughter of Jim, and director Louis Leterrier were on hand to show off the first substantial footage of the series, and its practical puppetry effects brought back floods of nostalgia as it honored the original.

Leterrier confirmed to the NYCC audience that there's no CGI in the film; it's 100 percent puppets. Henson added that the series only uses green screen to remove the puppeteers, which is actually old technology -- but something her father didn't have for the original. That's the only way they're advancing the art in order to pay tribute to what Leterrier called Henson's father's greatest accomplishment.

Age of Resistance was announced back in May 2017 and was accompanied by a teaser that was mostly concept art except for one quick shot of a Skeksis. That was re-shown at NYCC, and even though the new series only wrapped a week before the panel, Henson and Leterrier came with a behind-the-scenes video that showed off the new expert puppeteering work and how they've updated the world since the original film.

The story of Age of Resistance brings viewers back to the world of Thra, many years before The Dark Crystal, and follows a trio of Gelflings as they launch a rebellion to save their world and stop the Skeksis from taking power. The video invites fans back to "the age of wonder" to experience the story of how the resistance began.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will consist of 10 episodes and will premiere in 2019.
