Rugby Championship 2018: How Rassie stacks up

2018-10-06 20:17

Cape Town - Saturday's clash between the Springboks and All Blacks was one for the ages, but it was never going to have any impact on the overall tournament log.

Going into the match, the All Blacks had already secured the title while the Boks would finish 2nd in the competition regardless of what happened in Pretoria.

As it turns out, the Boks surrendered a 30-13 lead to concede three tries in the final 20 minutes to go down 32-20.

It was a heart-breaking night for South Africa, who came within a whisker of securing their first back-to-back wins over the All Blacks since 2009.

There is still the end-of-year tour to Europe to come, but now that the Championship is over we can look at how Rassie Erasmus fared in his first year of competition compared to his predecessors.

Saturday's result saw the Boks earn 1 losing bonus point, meaning that they finish on 3 wins and 3 losses for a total points haul of 15 points in the 2018 tournament.

That return is South Africa's best in a Rugby Championship since Heyneke Meyer's Boks that accumulated 19 points in both 2014 and 2013.

Allister Coetzee, meanwhile, scored 10 and 14 points in his two years in charge in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Bok Rugby Championship history:

2018 - 2nd (15 points)

2017 - 3rd (14 points)

2016 - 3rd (10 points)

2015 - 4th (2 points)

2014 - 2nd (19 points)

2013 - 2nd (19 points)

2012 - 3rd (12 points)
