The territorial administration has has declared holiday in all government offices, schools and colleges on Saturday on account of heavy rains forecast.
Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Friday held a series of meetings with officials to ascertain the administration’s preparedness to deal with heavy rain.
Talking to reporters after inspecting rain-affected areas and holding meetings with officials, the Chief Minister said the government was well prepared to deal with any situation arising because of rain. “We are well prepared to deal with any exigencies,” he said.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in the next few days.
IMD had predicted “heavy to very heavy rain” in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on October 7.
The agency had predicted around 25 cm of rainfall.
The territory had never witnessed such a downpour in the recent times, he added.
Specific tasks
The Public Works Department, Local Administration and Municipalities have been tasked with specific jobs in the event of flooding, he said.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister inspected Anna Nagar and other residential areas in Nellithope.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Committee had identified around 700 relief camps, mostly educational institutions and community centres.
They would be used as temporary relief camps to house people in case of flooding, said an official.
The official said around 20 drains under the control of Public Works Department and 12 under the management of Local Administration Department have been identified as vulnerable to flooding.
