Coimbatore: The city police on Saturday arrested a 40-year-old labourer in connection with a murder that took place at Race Course in the city last year.
The accused was identified as Chandran, a resident of Attimadai, on outskirts of the city.
S Raman, 56, who was working as a security guard of a private godown at Aadis Street, was found dead in a pool of blood in front of the building on March 25, 2017. Police found that the head of the victim was smashed with a stone. Though they initially suspected it to be an accident, autopsy reports confirmed that it was a murder. The Race Course police registered a case and launched an investigation into the murder.
During the course of investigation, police collected CCTV footage from the locality. The surveillance video showed Raman fighting with a man, who worked as a labourer in the area, a police officer said. “Both of them had engaged in a quarrel in an inebriated state, which soon turned violent. The video showed Chandran killing Raman by smashing his head with a stone,” the officer told TOI.
Race Course police booked Chandran under Section 302(murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and were on the lookout for him. But they were clueless about his whereabouts even after a year.
On Saturday, the Race Course police received a tip-off that Chandran was reaching the Coimbatore Railway Station from Kerala. A police team arrived at the station and nabbed the man when he alighted from the train.
As he was absconding for more than a year, police confirmed his identity and interrogated him.
During the course of investigation, the accused confessed to the crime, the officer added.
