Mngomezulu stunner sinks Chiefs in Durban

Cape Town - Polokwane City beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in an Absa Premiership clash played behind closed doors at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday evening.

Vusimuzi Mngomezulu scored the only goal of the game as Rise and Shine extended their unbeaten run in the league to six matches. Victory moves the Limpopo side up to fifth place on the log standings, Chiefs remain third.

The Amakhosi registered the first attempt in anger in the eighth minute of the match through Ryan Moon. The forward burst into a pocket of space at a corner-kick, but failed to hit the target with his ensuing header attempt, with an open goal at his mercy.

Chiefs continued to probe for the opener in what felt more like a training match due to the lack of supporters in the stands, with Dumisani Zuma unlucky to see his ambitious effort from range fly inches wide of goal just short of the half-hour mark.

Rise and Shine duly opened the scoring with their first notable attempt at goal on the cusp of halftime.

Mngomezulu played a neat one-two with Rodney Ramagalela before curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from way out, to leave Itumleng Khune and Co rather stunned as they headed down the tunnel at the break.

City were happy to defend their lead following the interval and proved a tough nut to crack.

The hosts finally conjured a shot at goal in the 57th minute and George Chigova had to be at his best to deny fellow countryman Khama Billiat from pulling the Glamour Boys level.

Bernard Parker made an instant impact from the bench and the forward, along with Siphelele Ntshangase, forced Chigova into saves in the final exchanges of regulation time.

Parker had another chance to rescue a point for Chiefs in stoppage time, but having done well to lose his marker, he could only succeed in guiding a tame effort straight down the City shot-stopper's throat.
