THANE: Five people suffered major burn injuries, while four others escaped with minor scalds in a fire that broke out after sudden leakage in a CNG cylinder late on Saturday evening in Thane.

The incident occurred in an under-construction 2,000sqft community hall located amid a dense residential locality in Indira Nagar here. Eyewitnesses told rescue officials that the gas from the partly filled cylinder used in vehicles, which had been dismantled and kept in the premises, suddenly started leaking and caught fire.

Police and fire officials along with the RDMC rushed to the spot to rescue the injured, who were nearby residents, vendors and masons working at the site.

The reason why the cylinder was in the premises and the cause of leakage will be investigated later, said a civic officer.
