Inspector General of Police Sumit Sharan on Friday took charge as Coimbatore City Police Commissioner.

Talking to reporters after assuming office, Mr. Sharan said he would soon be visiting all police stations in the city and hold reviews with officers in-charge of maintaining law and order and detecting crimes.

He had planned to improve traffic management in the city and take steps to collect fine electronically from traffic rule violators. His other priorities would be to prevent unauthorised parking and have more CCTV cameras installed.

In response to a question on the preparedness of city police ahead of rain, he said personnel from the city police and Home Guards were on alert to meet any emergency.

Inspector General of Police K. Periaiah, who assumed office of the West Zone, told journalists that his focus would be on improving the law and order situation.

He had instructed police personnel in stations with areas bordering Kerala and Karnataka to be on alert and track Maoist movement, if any.
