LUCKNOW: In a fresh controversy at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), seven general category students residing in Siddhartha hostel were shifted after being harassed by a group. The students were shifted to another hostel after two upper caste students complained about harassment and misbehaviour by a group of Dalit students, said BBAU officials.

Dean, student welfare, B S Bhadauria said, "One general category student gave two written complaints accusing some Ambedkar University Dalit Students' Union (AUDSU) members of harassing him. One general category PhD scholar also reported harassment by AUDSU group. Their parents called requesting for hostel change."

"Keeping their security and well-being in mind, we shifted the students," he added.

The complainant stated that AUDSU members snatched his laptop and threw it on bed besides abusing him and saying that the hostel is only for Dalit students.

The accused students have been issued showcause notice, said proctor Ram Chandra.

"The written complaint mentioned two names. I sought report from their departments and hostel management. It was found that one is an illegal occupant. AUDSU members have been involved in illegal activities on campus. I am preparing a report against them," said Chandra.

Refuting allegations, AUDSU member Basant Kanaujia said, "No one harassed the general category student. He was allotted room long before but he never stayed. When he came, we thought he was a fresher and went to his room for introduction. He was asked to keep his laptop aside and talk. No one threw his laptop."
