Man attempts to rape Australian woman on New York street

An Australian woman who moved to New York about four months ago has fought off a man who allegedly attempted to rape her as she walked home.

The 27-year-old woman, who is on a temporary work visa, moved into a unit in East Williamsburg when she arrived in the US.

At about 2.20am on Thursday, as she was walking home from a bar about four blocks from her unit, she was attacked from behind, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

"The individual... shoved her against a wall, removed her underwear and tried to sexually assault her," the spokeswoman said.

"When she resisted, she was knocked to the ground and he touched her genitals."

Nearby CCTV shows the woman kicking the man, including in his groin, as he tried to pin her against a wall.

The suspect fled the area in a dark-coloured, four-door sedan. He was described by police as being about 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall, aged in his 20s, dark skinned and wearing dark coloured clothing and work boots.

After he fled, the Australian woman walked about two kilometres to the closest police station to report the attack.

She was taken to Woodhull Medical Centre for treatment.

The attack happened near Richardson Street and Kingsland Avenue, an area of Williamsburg that has a low crime rate.
