ABVP sweeps University of Hyderabad students' union elections

HYDERABAD: After sitting out of power for eight years, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) swept all major seats at the Students Union (SU) 2019-20 elections of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), the results for which were announced late on Saturday evening.

The party’s biggest victory was the president’s post, bagged by Aarti N Nagpal, who garnered as many as 1,663 votes in her favour. She defeated her competitors -- Student Federation of India’s (SFI) candidate, Erram Naveen Kumar and United Democratic Alliance (UDA)’s G Sreeja Vasthavi – by a significant margin as the two managed to get only 1,329 and 842 votes respectively.



The other major posts that went ABVP’s way were: vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary, sports secretary and cultural secretary. While Amit Kumar won with a margin of 247 votes as VP, Dheeraj Sangoji was elected as General Secretary, Praveen Kumar S as Joint Secretary, Aravind S Kumar as Cultural Secretary and Nikhil Raj K has been elected as Sports secretary.

The ABVP members, whose poll promises include providing safe transportation, proper sanitation facilities, healthy mess food, fellowships among others, said that this election results came as a breather for them as they have been losing with close margin since the past two years.

A total of 20 candidates contested for the posts of President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Joint Secretary, Cultural Secretary and Sports Secretary. Another Thirty-Nine candidate contested for the posts of School Board Members (PG & Research). 55 candidates contested for the posts of Councillors in their respective schools. Seven more candidates contested for the post of ICC (GSCASH) Committee members. 75 per cent polling was recorded out of the 5000 odd students who were eligible to exercise their franchise.
