About 100 commuters trapped for more than an hour on Metro train

About 100 people were trapped on a stationary train in Melbourne's west for an hour and a half on Friday afternoon due to an overhead wire fault.

The city-bound train sat idle near Yarraville from about 2pm.

Commuters on the train were unable to disembark until Metro said it was safe to do so about 3.30pm.

The power fault stopped services on sections of the Werribee and Williamstown lines, with cancellations set to extend well into peak hour.

Services are not running between Footscray and Newport on the Werribee line, and Footscray and Williamstown on the Williamstown line.

Trains will continue to operate between the city and Footscray, and between Newport and Werribee.

A Metro Trains spokesman apologised to commuters for the inconvenience.

"We apologise to our passengers who have been delayed due to an overhead power fault near Yarraville," he said.

"Our crews are working quickly and safely to get passengers moving again as soon as possible."

The cause of the power fault is not yet known.
