Tirupur: Upset over not having a child in his five-year long relationship with a 38-year-old woman, a 22-year-old labourer kidnapped a one-and-a-half-year-old child from his house at Suriya Nagar near ABT Road here on Thursday evening. Police were, however, quick to crack the case by arresting him in a couple of hours.
The
arrested was identified as Sankarshan Sethi, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar at Chettipalayam in Coimbatore. A native of Baleshwar district in Odisha, Sethi had come to the Dollar City a few years ago, an investigation officer said. “He was residing at Suriya Nagar until a few months ago. He has been in a relationship with Suchitra Dandapat, 38, of West Bengal for the past five years, but the couple didn’t have a child.”
During his stay at Suriya Nagar, Sethi had befriended Bibiran Pattayat, 26, of Baleshwar district in Odisha, his wife Baby Rani and son Uthaya Narayan, the officer said. “Pattayat and his wife are employed with a knitwear unit in the city.” On Thursday evening, Uthaya Narayan went missing from their house. The couple lodged a complaint with the Tirupur Central police, who found it to be a case of kidnapping. During inquiry, a girl in the neighbourhood told police that she had spotted the child with Sethi.
Police subsequently left for Ambedkar Nagar at Chettipalayam and found the child in Sethi’s house on Thursday night. He told police that he was frustrated with not having a child. “Sethi said he took away Uthaya Narayan as he was found of the baby boy.” Police registered a case and arrested Sethi, who was remanded in judicial custody. tnn
