THANE: The prime accused in the Rs 54 lakh
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) job scam had purchased jewellery worth over a lakh for his girlfriend from money siphoned from 36 victims. "The parents of one victim passed away on hearing of the fraud," a police officer said.
Alleged kingpin Datta Prasad aka Tushar Dhuri (22), Rahul Kelkar, Prakash Gaikwad and Aniket Rane were arrested by Thane crime branch last week. "Kelkar returned Rs 2.5 lakh, which he got as commission, Rane Rs 45000, while the girlfriend of the main accused returned four tolas gold," said the officer.
Dhuri posed as a BMC human resource department staffer, claimed he was best employee and flaunted trophies and awards to convince the aspirants. He travelled in a car with BMC logo, said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Deepak Devraj.
An offence was registered at Thane Nagar police station under IPC sections for cheating.
