A 19-year-old has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a case of extortion and attempt to murder in Paharganj, the police said on Thursday.
The accused used ice cream vendor’s phone to make extortion calls, they said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ajit Singla said Piyush Kataria has been arrested while his accomplices — Honey, Vivek and Ankit — are absconding.
On Sunday, one Rajeev Oberoi, owner of a bar in Paharganj, approached the police stating that he had been receiving extortion calls from an unknown number.
Fired shots at victim
He also said that on September 29, someone fired two shots at him while he was driving in the area.
After putting the number on technical surveillance, the police found that it belonged to an ice cream vendor. “The vendor stated that four boys, in a car, had come to his stall to buy ice cream and they used his mobile phone to make a call. The same modus operandi was used on three other occasions,” Mr. Singla said.
CCTV footage
When the CCTV footage was scanned, the vendor identified the car used in commission of crime after which police sought details of the owner leading investigators to the accused.
He was arrested from Gole Market on Sunday.
“He admitted to his involvement in the incident. He disclosed that his other accomplices were Honey, Vivek and Ankit. They had together made the extortion calls and had also fired on the complainant,” the officer said.
