BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is set to launch a jobs portal and mobile application called ‘Employ’, that is expected to give existing private job portals a run for their money.

The government has tied up with the UN Development Programme and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for this initiative. Skill development secretary Amlan Aditya Biswas said: “We are creating a no-holds-barred platform to bring together unemployed youth of the state and private sector firms to make job and talent hunting easier.” He said the best part of these platforms is that both the services will be made available free of cost.

Unemployed youth can directly upload their details along with their CV and certificates without much effort, and private companies can find trained and certified candidates under government programmes at the click of a mouse. If everything goes as per the plan, the government plans to launch both the portal and app simultaneously on November 1, to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava, Biswas said.

Apart from providing information on job openings in various sectors, Biswas said the portal and app will update users on self-employment schemes, scholarships and provide guidance to entrepreneurs. The app, for now, will be available only on Android. Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has stepped up focus on jobs, keeping an eye on Lok Sabha elections next year, where unemployment is likely to become a major issue to put up a fight together against the BJP.

The government wants to transform conventional employment exchanges in districts, and sync the recruitment process with market trends by launching skill development centres in all major tier-2 and tier-3 cities. A skill development university, named after Bengaluru founder Kempegowda, will also come up in Kumaraswamy’s home district Ramanagara.

“There are an estimated 5 lakh job vacancies in the private sector, from skills jobs to qualified ones. The portal will be open for both skills jobs like carpentry and plumbing, and also qualified jobs like software engineering, keeping in mind the latest market dynamics,” a senior officer said.

The portal will allow anyone to upload their job profiles to enable the private sector to identify their talents and invite them for interviews. The government will also enrol online candidates trained under government funding, put up their profiles and connect them with employers through the portal.

According to the previous Union labour ministry survey, Karnataka stood second after Gujarat in the unemployment rate. “The idea is to overtake Gujarat in the next survey and claim credit during poll campaigning,’’ a minister said.
