BENGALURU: Residents of Vinayakanagar, near Marathahalli, woke up to the loud drone of a borewell rig on Thursday. It was drilling a well bang in the middle of 4th Cross, I Main Road.
On learning that BBMP had commissioned drilling of the borewell, the residents immediately contacted the corporator, who, however, asked them to mind their own business.
The incident took place in Vinayakanagar B Block, 1st Main, 4th Cross, near HAL Airport compound. Around 7am, a borewell rigging machine arrived and labourers started work in the middle of the road.
One of the residents said that they contacted Konena Agrahara corporator Chandrappa Reddy as to who had authorised the borewell drilling in the middle of the road. “He told us that we have no right to question this as it is being done in public interest. We told him that we had not been consulted whether a borewell was required in the middle of the road. He replied that we residents don’t need to be consulted. He then put the phone down rudely. We contacted the assistant engineer of the area, who said the same thing,” he said.
The residents spoke to the joint commissioner, who, promised them that he would look into the matter. The residents said drilling work continued late into the night.
Corporator Chandrappa Reddy, a former BJP leader, was elected to the present council as an independent. He has been instrumental is mobilising support of independent corporators to support Congress candidates in mayoral elections.
Chandrappa said BBMP had sanctioned 10 borewells for his ward and four are already in place. “As Cauvery water supply in the locality is poor and residents are demanding good supply, digging was done. Once work is complete, the borewell will be covered and the road surface relaid to ensure that motorists are not affected. The borewell will only benefit locals,” he said, alleging that the BJP was politicising the issue as he was an independent corporator.
