Tax defaulters
In a major crackdown on tax defaulters in Ahmedabad, the civic body has decided to auction 26 properties in the next two months. The tax default amount is around Rs2,500crore and the culprits were sent legal notices last month, a senior Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) official said.
Also, there are around 30 closed mills who have been defaulting the property tax since last many years. However, nine of these property owners have cleared their dues, the civic body said, adding that 15 are yet to clear the tax. The assets will be seized under Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation (GPMC) Act.
“First, a demand notice was sent to the defaulter. Properties of those who ignored the notices was sealed,” said a tax department official. The civic body has divided the city into seven zones and almost 100 defaulters from each zone will face the axe after this Diwali. To run the owners dry of resources and comfort, the department has also disconnected the drainage and water connection to these properties.
“There are different kinds of tax defaulters in the city. We are taking steps to recover our money. We have identified the defaulters and served them notices,” said Arjav Shah, deputy municipal commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
The auctioning list comprises factory and industry owners, industrial area owners under GIDC, godown owners and several commercial units.
